26-year-old Xiao Qing began to feel severe abdominal pain after engaging in sexual intercourse with her husband; the two had been apart for six months due to work and had reunited on August 19th. The pain was so intense that she was immediately rushed to a hospital in Changsha, the capital of central China’s Hunan province. Scans revealed that there had been an ovarian cyst on her right ovary, measuring three centimeters (1.18 inches) in diameter, that had ruptured, resulting in the loss of roughly 40% of her blood, reports stated.

“There were about 1,500ml of blood loss in her abdomen, which was about 40 per cent of her blood volume. If she was sent in later, there would be life-threatening risks,” Dr. Huang Mei, the attending physician, said.

Fortunately, the 26-year-old woman made it to the hospital in time. She underwent surgery to stop the hemorrhaging and is currently recovering from the ordeal.

Ovarian cysts are pretty common, especially for women who still get their monthly period. According to WebMD, these are often small, painless, and harmless, and the majority of the time they go away on their own without the need for medical intervention.

However, they can prove fatal if they get large enough and they rupture; additionally, they may trigger other life-threatening conditions, such as ovarian torsion or even cancer, the latter is rare according to NHS.

Many women may have ovarian cysts without knowing it, and ruptures can be caused by an event, such as sexual intercourse or other strenuous activity.

Women who are experiencing sudden abdominal pain, swelling, and bloating in their abdominal region should see a medical professional immediately, as it could be a ruptured ovarian cyst that can prove fatal.
