Step 1
Obtain a “Receipt of Report” from Local Police Station
The loss or theft of a foreign passport must first be reported to the Police Station closest to where the case of passport loss / theft occurred. A receipt will be issued by the Police Station.
Step 2
Obtain a “Confirmation of Reporting the Loss of Passport” from the local Exit and Entry Administration Department
- Original and photocopy of “Receipt of Report” from the Police Station where the passport was lost / stolen (see Step 1);
- Two recent photographs for foreigners in the city where you live and a receipt of such photograph;
- Report form with completed statement regarding the lost or stolen of passport. Leave the name and telephone number of your contact person in the city.
- Photocopy of evidence for your nationality or citizenship in a foreign country (passport, ID card etc.);
- Registration Form of Temporary Residence;
- Photocopy of your Foreigner’s Residence Permit, if you are a Foreigner’s Residence Permit holder;
- Other documents considered as necessary by the public security authority.
Fees: not required
Time processing: normally two working days for processing upon receipt of all the required documents
Expedited service can be provided only when there is an emergency.
Step 3
Apply for a new passport or replacing certificates from your embassy or consulate in China
Important notice! The validity of a “Confirmation of Reporting the Loss of Passport” is 30 days. Within 30 days, you must apply for a new passport or replacing certificate at your embassy or consulate in China and apply for a visa or residence permit to the Exit and Entry Administration Division of the Public Security Bureau with this “Confirmation of Reporting the Loss of Passport”.
Step 4
Apply for a Chinese visa or Residence Permit from the Exit and Entry Administration Division of the Public Security Bureau
To make sure you can continue your stay in China or exit china, you must apply for a new Chinese visa or Residence Permit to the Exit and Entry Administration Division of the Public Security Bureau immediately after you get a new passport or replacing certifications.
Time Processing: it will normally take five working days for processing upon receipt of all the required documents.
Where and when can you get the passport reissued?
You can get your passport reissued at local Exit and Entry Administration of the Municipal Public Security Bureau. Take notes of the address and working hours if you are in Guangzhou. For other cities, you can consult local Municipal Public Security Bureau about the office information.

Note: Please use fountain pen or signing pen. Photocopies shall be in the form of A4.
Keep these in mind before you set off to China!
Photocopy
- Photocopy your passport and bring it with you when abroad. The actual one is only used when you check in for hotels and flights.
- E-mail yourself a digital copy that can be accessed anywhere.
- Besides the passport, also take photocopies of your credit cards, bank cards and another important cards and pieces of identification.
Embassy or Consulate
Get the phone numbers and locations for the nearest embassy of your country or consulate for every destination during your trip. When facing troubles, call them. The sooner, the better. They can help guide you through the process.
Emergency contact
Fill in the emergency contact information on the last page of your passport, in case someone who picks it could contact you in time.
Police Report
When replacing a lost passport, you might be asked to provide a police report.
