1.  Analyze what you hear critically

Everyone has an opinion or knowledge they would like to share with you concerning the field you want to pursue. Don’t quickly jump to taking advice from people just because you think they know better or have a long enough experience. However, don’t go into something in another man’s land without thorough research. For instance, if you get a job that may pay a little lower than the standard salary or are not sure if your employer likes you, don’t start quitting jobs because your friend whose been doing the same thing for ten years said so.

It might probably be one of the few offers you may land on if not the last one. The truth of the matter is that the demand for foreign workers may be high in some fields that require them, and then again, there is a competitive amount of supply of foreigners to fill that demand. However, before entering a job you must be well versed in the field. Know it all, from payment systems and contract terms and conditions down to what exactly you are required to do and how to do it, and you may only be able to do so by contacting other professionals who came into the game before you. So analyze critically and rely on your guts.

2.  Trust nobody!

Before you go out searching for a job, put your nose down and use your brains. Don’t quickly jump into things especially when you turn desperate, because it is at this point that a lot of people can take advantage of your vulnerability and swindle you. Be careful about what information you put out to employment agents and even employers themselves. You are on your own in this and you must prove your maturity by studying your environment and the people in it quickly. People might come with offers that seem feasible but then again, you have to look closely. As a foreigner trying to get a job elsewhere, you should remember to put those emotions aside and work your way through to desired achievements.

3.  Don’t be shy to ask questions

Ask all the questions that comes to mind and that will help you get your desired job. Ask to your satisfaction, ask till you have no more, and ask till you feel like you already know too much. Ask questions!

4.  Be willing to learn

Don’t come to someone’s motherland with your arrogant self! In fact, you are at a better place with a job in another country than your peers, because you are viable to harsher circumstances that will build you and better experiences that can improve your resume. Not only will you learn life skills that you can only find from a foreign country, you will also meet a whole lot of people, both locals and foreigners that will take you to higher heights, only if you learn. Learn the system, learn how things are done, and learn how to communicate, learn where and when to do things at the right time, learn how to grow and mature personally, learn how to improve your profession, learn!

5. Go out!

Being an introverted shy mouse, never helped anybody. I’m not saying go out of your comfort zone just to meet new people, but how else will you meet people if you don’t go out to intentionally meet them. In that sense, if you like to go hiking, do that more. Go out hiking, with others who will introduce you to other friends and other friends, and voila! You may be employed. If you prefer to go out clubbing, don’t just go with the intention of getting drunk and wasted to the extent that you can’t even see the person next to you.  Talk to others, on your trips with friends. Make time to have some fun time and in the process, develop your network. You may also participate in regularly held job fairs as you can get the chance to meet companies and employees first hand.

6.  Be nice to people

A friend of mine came into contact with the Human Resource Head of a company just because he stood up for an older man (who happened to be the HR) to sit down in a crowded bus. In places like China, don’t underestimate no one. Be nice to people. Smile to others whilst you move around (yes, I know it gets uncomfortable sometimes).

7.  Keep working on your resume, on a constant basis.

Find ways to improve upon it and don’t limit your search to just the field you have studied for. You never know where applying to other fields might take you.  Finding little jobs on the side might help as well as part time jobs.

8.  Be smart!

You may not be fluent in the local language here but use your head. Be clever enough to know that something is off when you are finding a job. Sometimes foreigners get entangled in so many issues because they put themselves in such situations. For instance, when you realize that an offer seems too good to be true, slow down and think it through. Don’t just go into it because you think you are a foreigner and deserve to be paid well.

9.  You will be stressed out and under pressure

If you really want to live the life you truly desire, you need to know this- nothing good comes easy. And as you search for jobs, on your bed with your crispy and chilled snacks, don’t hate yourself for living the lazy life now. In fact, I advise you to enjoy it whilst it lasts, because there will come a time where you will do everything and anything to keep awake; there will come a time when your friends will think you are avoiding them because you don’t even have time for yourself. Oh yes, that time will come when you feel numb and feel like you are almost on the verge of death because you were not eating healthy or sleeping well enough. So know this that it won’t be easy, even after a job, but winners never quit right?

10.  Be patient

Speaking of winners who never quit, this is more of an advice to all foreigners in search of a job. Be patient on yourself. You will build up a ton of contacts due to employment opportunities, your wechat messages may be unending from employers and agents that claim to employ you and will fail you. You will definitely send your resume, picture and documents to so many people you will even lose track of it, you will be tired, you will be discouraged, you will be angered but be patient. Keep calm and keep at it!

11. Carry a positive attitude

Don’t apply for jobs with a sense of negativity or develop a halfhearted zeal towards an interview or application. Rather embrace each one as they come especially with a positive attitude and a longing to put in your best in obtaining it. Have an optimistic view to every situation because it is there that your eyes will quickly be opened to lessons learned.

Task yourself to hunt very well for jobs. You never know where exactly your employment avenue will come from. Don’t limit yourself to only a few job apps or websites when searching for jobs. Go all out and ask around, continue to surf the internet for clues on other places. Join group pages that will help you in obtaining your goal and task yourself constantly to find new avenues to reach employers.
