“Oh My China!” Some people say they have seen it all, and others may say they have even eaten it all. But have any of us really heard it all? This article is special in that respect as it unravels an interesting topic beyond mainstream media.
When discoveries are made, they are usually proven as science or discarded as junk. But once a discovery has failed to meet both logic and reason, it gives rise to mystery, some of which have only been found in China.
Today we will encounter strange places, objects and artifacts, which are currently unresolved mysteries of the world, with potential to re-write history itself.
The Sunken Lion City – (Qiandao Lake, Hangzhou)
CHINA’S ATLANTIS: THE SUNKEN ‘LION CITY’ Photo: galacticconnection
It is believed the city of Shi Cheng (also known as Lion City) was built nearly 1,400 years ago. Based on records of the region’s history, the city is assumed to be quite large, possibly over 60 football fields wide. Shi Cheng was also unusual in that it was constructed with 5 city gates and towers, as opposed to the norm of 4.
Metropolis: Shi Cheng, dubbed Lion City after the Lion Mountains that surround it, has lain hidden under 131 feet of water since 1959 to generate hydroelectric power

Shi Cheng had only been recently discovered through underwater exploration in 2001. Scientists found Shi Cheng to be intact, with the structures, carvings, and arches still well preserved. Experts have made efforts to document the city, however no records or clues of its existence have been found. Furthermore, a chilling question posed by historians is how did such a well intact city based on strong foundation sink in the first place?

Lost Civilization at the Bottom of Fuxian Lake – (Yunnan Province)
Ancient Underwater City And Lost Civilization At The Bottom Of Fuxian Lake Photo:messagetoeagle
A good question to address is – what’s up with these sunken cities? Was there an unknown natural disaster which stormed this area, wiping its civilization the face of the Earth? If so, then when?
This mystery lies over a large span of land scattered underwater, stretching out to Kunming City. Chinese archaeologists who surveyed the lake found two main discoveries:
- Large Round, colosseum-like structures,
- Buildings VERY similar to the Mayan pyramids.
These structures revealed no reason behind the disappearance of the civilisation or evidence of the people that lived there. Only stories have been told of a horse like animal that was seen at the lake where it was seen to have flown out of the water.
Dropa Stones – (Border of China and Tibet)

This is a strange one.
When we hear about aliens, a few of us may be sceptics. However, in China during a time and a place where science fiction was scarce, if not completely unknown; a series of mysterious events took place, which left locals uneasy.
In 1938 on the China-Tibetan border, Professor Chi Pu Tei of Beijing University saw tombs in the mountain caves of Baian Kara Ula. He uncovered skeletons with fragile bones measuring only 4 feet in length. Their skulls were large, with bodies unrelated to any ape species. The scientists also discovered rock drawings on the cave’s walls, showing people wearing space suits surrounded by the sun, moon, earth and stars.

Found amongst these were large stone disks with carved hieroglyphs. The disks told stories of the “Dropa people”, who were space travellers from an unnamed distant planet. Their spaceship crashed the inaccessible region of Baian-Kara-Ula Mountains, where they found refuge and survived.
Efforts to locate the dropa people failed until 1995, when their sightings had been reported on the Sichuan border of the Baian-Kara-Ula Mountains. The key feature of this tribe was the size of its people who were no taller than 4 ft. After the news had spread, immediate tracking of the tribe had begun, but they had completely vanished by then.

The cave is a magnificent structure, boasting beautiful sceneries – located in a small valley 1630 m above sea level on the western Guizhou Plateau.
It was discovered that humans were present at Panxian Dadong Cave about 300,000 years ago. It was also discovered that gigantic animals, such as elephant-like Stegodons and lumbering Rhinoceros lived and co-existed amongst humans.

Evidence such as remains of these has been found by archaeologists including giant tooth and bone samples.
Scientists are however confused over how these animals could reach a mountain cave located over 1600m above sea level.
Ancient Magical Mirrors – Some of the strangest (and scariest) 哦objects in the world!
Photo:MessageToEagle
Where it’s from: The exact origins of ancient Chinese “magical” mirrors are untraceable, although the objects are very much still scattered around China and not quite publicised as they should be.
How it works: When held in the hand, it appears to be a perfectly normal mirror; However, when held in light, its reflecting surface becomes “see through”, making the characters or patterns on the back appear on a wall. The solid bronze structure becomes transparent, but how?
It was discovered the ancient Chinese used a trick. Experiments by European scientists revealed that the surfaces of ‘magic’ mirrors had irregular curves, varying between thin and thick. Finally, a mercury film was laid just under the surface; further bending light.
Purpose of these mirrors: The only information available is from Ancient Japan, where magical mirrors were used to reflect images of wizards and beasts for secret rituals. However, the real purpose of the mirror can only be confirmed through an ancient book called “Record of Ancient Mirrors”, which mysteriously disappeared thousands of years ago.
In place of the lost book, various historians’ published material since then surrounding theories as to why the mirrors were used…
Perhaps the person responsible for its disappearance felt that some secrets are best kept unknown?
Hanging Coffins – (Yangtze River, Hubei)
Eerie: The tombs – attached to mountain cliffs in Gongxian, Sichuan province – were left behind by the Bo people, believed to have died out 400 years ago Photo:dailymail
Experts who have surveyed the area have discovered that this dangerous graveyard belonged to the “Bo people” of the Ming dynasty. These coffins are suspended on the steepest part of the cliff or are placed in between gaps around the mountain as high as 130 meters from the ground.
Safe from scavengers: It is also believed the hanging coffins prevented bodies from being taken by animals and also blessed the soul for all eternity Photo:Dailymail
Secret Ancient World Buried Under The Taklamakan Desert – (Xinjiang)
One of the mummies found in the Small River Cemetery near the eastern end of the Tarim River in the Taklamakan Desert Photo:ancientpages
Also known as “The Sea of Death” the Taklamakan desert is the largest in China. People believed that once you entered this place there was no way out.
Recently, archaeologists have dug up mummies and tracings of an entire ancient world hidden under the sand! These discoveries surprised local authorities as former deputy director of Xinjiang Archaeology Research Institute said that experts had believed there was no trace of humans in the desert.
The mummies found were completely well preserved and estimated to be at least 3000 years old. It has been revealed that the corpses originally had red and blonde hair, Caucasian features and did not appear to be ancestrally related to Han Chinese.
The Great PYRAMIDS…of China! – (Xi’An)
The Pyramids of China Photo:DifferentPast
Standing tall at the South-west border of Xi’An, was the largest pyramid in the world. The structure was said to measure 1,000 feet in comparison to the Great Pyramid of Egypt which compared only a mere 450 feet in height.
According to Chinese scholars, the great pyramid existed during the Hsia Dynasty in 1767 B.C., and was painted with different colours on each of its four sides. Now the magnificent structure is nowhere to be found and has since been a mystery as in to how and why these pyramids came about to be.
However, about 40 miles west in the valleys surrounding Xian, at least 15 more pyramid like structures have been discovered, some rising to an elevation almost as great as the original. Researchers have been surprised to see trees planted on the sides of the pyramids, yet no entrance has been found into any of them.
What are your thoughts? Have you seen or heard of any of these mysteries? Do you have any ideas of their resolution? Or are there any more mysteries in China which haven’t been mentioned?
