The male passenger, surnamed Shen, dropped his two-carat diamond ring down a toilet on a flight to Hangzhou city in China on May 21, Chinese media reports.
The panicked man had to seek help from airport staff who managed to fetch his ring from the waste tank after hours of searching.
Mr Shen was traveling on a flight from Doha to Hangzhou’s Xiaoshan International Airport when he lost the ring, local media Hangzhou Daily reported.

Upon landing, the airport staff helped him to call the cleaning department and check the sewage tank and pool.
Waste water on planes is usually sucked down into a holding tank before being cleaned out by crews on the ground. Then the waste will be transported to a sewage pool.
The two airport staff decided to try their luck in the waste pool. However they failed to find anything after spending an hour walking barefoot in the dirty water with a metal detector.
They then realised the diamond band might be stuck in the holding tank.

They returned to open the tank and searched it with the help of a torch on their phone.
Finally, the staff spotted the ring and managed to get it out.
Mr Shen, anxiously waiting at the airport, was so shocked he was unable to speak when he saw the ring.
Calming down, he repeatedly expressed his gratitude towards the two staff who soaked themselves in waste water.
Both of them said they felt unclean even after an hour-long shower.
