One brave Chinese tourist has become the proud owner of a gold bar, but only after eating 1.23 kilograms of fried insects in a competition.

Mr Peng scooped first prize at a bug eating challenge in Lijiang when he scoffed 1.23 kilograms of fried worms and grasshoppers in only five minutes to win a 24k gold bar. The bugs were all dead prior to consumption.

It did not say how much the gold bar was worth.
Insects have been a part of Yunnan cuisine for centuries, long before their potential as sustainable sources of protein caught the eye of the western world. Bee larvae, grasshoppers and cicadas are just some items to be found on menus in the region.

Some tourists who took the same challenge said they shut their eyes because they felt frightened, the website reported, while others said it was a good challenge.

A woman from Guangdong, who said she ate worms occasionally at home, managed about 500 grams of the insects but could not continue with the challenge because they were “too dry”, while “some black insects tasted terrible”.
