Despite China’s blocking of Instagram for those in the country, it’s surprising how many Chinese continue to regularly use the paragraph application. They can do this the same way you can, and in these three steps, I’ll explain how to access Instagram.
Does Instagram Work In China?
Step 1: Internet access in China
Getting online in China sounds easy, right? But you may find it more difficult than you first thought.
In China, the most common way to get online is.
Via Wi-Fi: In China’s larger cities, you’ll find Wifi access everywhere, but as you go further inland, the more difficult to find. While there are many ways to get reliable WiFi in China, relying on Wifi to get online may not be ideal.
Via international roaming. If you’re traveling to China for a short period of time, you can work with a domestic network operator. They will offer international roaming services when you use your own phone in China. This usually means you’ll get a certain amount of data and/or minutes to use while you’re in China. Note: This can be expensive.
Via a local SIM card. It’s not difficult for foreigners to get a local SIM card to access the internet via any unlocked phone. You’ll need to use your passport to register the number, but the monthly service can be incredibly cheap. In some major airports (Beijing, Shanghai), you’ll find kiosks where you can purchase a Chinese SIM card. Otherwise, you’ll have to go to a China Telecom, China Unicom or China Mobile store to buy one.
But as I’ve already mentioned above, since Instagram has been blocked, there are still issues accessing Instagram in China once you’re connected to the internet.
Step 2: Connect to a VPN
Ideally, you’ll have a VPN set up before you get to China, as it’s going to be a real hassle once you get there, so be aware of that as you read this and consider installing a VPN app on your phone right now.
Even if China censors everything, a VPN will tunnel through and allow you to access sites like Facebook, Gmail, and even Instagram in China.
Step 3: Log in to Instagram
If your phone has internet access and you have a reliable VPN installed and running, you should be able to log in without a problem! Instagram. there are times when I use Instagram and I need to disconnect and connect to another VPN server, but that doesn’t happen very often.
