We may have all heard the weirdest things about weddings – from one bride asking her best male buddies to be her bridesmaids to a groom hiring professional groomsmen he knows nothing about. But for a bride to ask her bridesmaids to pay for her wedding gown?? Would anyone, as a bridesmaid, invest into the gown of a wedding that is not even theirs?

Definitely, it is one thing if the bride is a close friend in need of help like this; however in this case, the bride is described as a control freak and a ‘bridezilla’ who delegates a big chunk of wedding preparations that include the right cake maker for the wedding, table decorations, bridesmaid dress colours, hairstyle and makeup looks, and even the buttonholes for the groomsmen, to all seven bridesmaids!

One of these seven bridesmaids, Hayley, recounts her experience on Mamamia, and how it all started with this mail – “Hey Hayley, How’s it going? I need some cake-maker suggestions by COB today please, Jase and I really want to get a wriggle on with this and need the contact details, price brackets, flavours and an idea of how prestigious the vendor is – in a table would be great. Excel is probably best please. Thanks!” And when Hayley failed to send the information she needed on time because she had a full time job as a high school teacher, she received this mail from the bride, which clearly didn’t sound quite too appreciative of the effort being made. “Thanks for this, would’ve been really helpful to have it yesterday when specified but I appreciate it.”

What even adds salt to injury is the bit where the bridesmaids had to cancel their personal plans to go dress shopping with the bride for three weekends in a row. Finally, a decision has been made and the bridesmaids settle for a set of dresses which cost them $550 each from their own coffers. The Australian bride, on the other hand, found a ‘stunning’ Marchesa wedding dress fit for a princess and worth a royal bargain, $10,500.

A rational being would find a cheaper alternative to the gown; but even when Caroline (the bride) and her fiancé had exceeded their budget on the wedding, she still insisted on getting that gown. After all, ‘you only get married once’!

So it boils down to the part where the bride turns to her seven bridesmaids for help and asks that they each pay $150 for her ‘dream dress’. Even more outrageous is the fact that their bank accounts will have to take a pounding from the bachelorette party, bridal shower, accommodation (not forgetting, their own bridesmaid dresses) and they had the guts to agree to a three day spa date before the wedding, which is definitely not excluded from the expenses to be made.

Although, three of the bridesmaids had agreed to pay for the contribution, Hayley is not particularly happy about how this bridesmaid experience turned out. She has considered abandoning her role as bridesmaid, which will terminate her friendship with the bride.

So far a lot of comments have urged her on to get out of the friendship while others recounted similar stories. But is it worth it? What do you think?
