WeChat, China’s self-proclaimed ‘app that does everything’ now boasts over 1 billion active users. With such a huge user base, it’s no wonder that WeChat scams have popped up one after another.

Recently some people received the following message (or similar) on WeChat:

“According to the explicit provisions of the network criminal law, crack down on Internet fraud! Your account will be frozen due to failure in ‘second real name authentication’. Please click in the link here to re-authenticate.”

This message is from fake accounts which will go by the name of Payment Security Authentication or Security payment management, using the exact same profile picture as that of the official account of WeChat Pay. The similar profile picture and the urgent style of writing have hooked a lot of people into clicking this Trojan Horse link.

There is no second ‘real name authentication’. You can finish the only ‘real name authentication’ in ‘Wallet – Top right corner – Manages Payment – Real name authentication’.

1 WeChat official accounts can only be followed, they can’t be added to friends, whereas the fake accounts can
