A five-year-old child in northern China has torn up 50,000 yuan in banknotes that his parents left at home, and the bank said they could do nothing to help.

The boy, from Qingdao, Shandong province, found the hidden cash and played with it while his parents were away from home on Saturday, the local news portal Xwh.cn reported.
The father, identified only by his surname Gao, said he took the pieces of banknotes to a nearby bank for help but was told that he had to piece all of them together so the bank could exchange new banknotes for him.

The money, all 100-yuan banknotes, were torn up into such small pieces that Gao found it was impossible to reconstruct them.
“I tried very carefully for two days but could only repair a few of the notes. Some were torn up into a couple of pieces, and some into a dozen. It’s too hard,” he was quoted as saying.
The father, who is a businessman, said the money was a loan from the bank. He “criticised” the son but could not punish him. “After all, he’s too young to understand,” he said.
