Entrepreneurship atmosphere, policy environment, and intellectual support were the three main aspects assessed.
Based on statistics provided by the Tencent Research Institute, the report outlined five start-up centers across the Chinese mainland: the Northern China center with Beijing and Tianjin playing the leading role, the Eastern China center with Shanghai, Hangzhou, Suzhou and Nanjing as prominent players, the Southern China center where Shenzhen and Guangzhou are most competitive, the Central China center with Wuhan as the core, and the Western China center where Chengdu and Xi’an offer the most start-up appeal.
Compared with 2015, both investors and entrepreneurs were more prudent last year, which explained why the start-ups related to the mobile internet industry advanced in a more sensible way, analyzed the report.
It also noted that more than half of the online innovation and entrepreneurship were registered in first-tier cities where human resources are abundant and the market more mature.
Since 2016, Beijing, the forerunner in supporting mass entrepreneurship and innovation, has exerted more efforts in dispersing its non-capital functions and tightening its immigration policy that is expected to substantially benefit neighboring cities, particularly the newly established Xiongan New Area where innovation and entrepreneurship are set to boom.
